Lecture Series | Empty Geometry with Joshua Kopel

The Seattle Metals Guild is honored to host Guild members and their friends in a series of monthly presentations from experts in our field.

Join us for an in-person presentation plus hands-on show & tell of work with machinist and guild member Joshua Kopel.

For the past several years, Josh has invested heavily in honing his ability to make small (sometimes very small) folded seam boxes. Josh will share some of what he has learned about his process, and some examples of what he has been able to create so far.

Joshua Kopel was university trained as a metalsmith but has spent the majority of his career in other industries, and has only recently returned to creative endeavors. He maintains an entirely unprofessional practice from his studio in West Seattle where he experiments with both traditional and nontraditional methods of small scale fabrication. Being endlessly fascinated by the variation possible in even simple geometric forms, he mostly constructs small boxes and other more difficult-to-classify objects.

Seattle-area location TBA.

Lecture Series | The Future of Apprenticeships with Nanz Aalund

The Seattle Metals Guild is honored to host friends and members in a series of monthly presentations from experts in our field.

Join us for an online presentation of an exciting new apprenticeship program, with artist, author, and guild member Nanz Aalund.

In addition to literally writing the book on professional apprenticeships, Nanz has recently collaborated with members of The MJSA Education Foundation to create an exciting new program. Designed to revive what was once a vital part of the jewelry industry's recruiting and training regimen, the Mentor & Apprenticeship Program allows businesses to transfer knowledge while also showing aspiring workers a recognizable career path. Standardized certification empowers jewelers! Come learn more about this new opportunity to earn both money and certification while developing your skills as a master craftsperson.

Nanz Aalund taught jewelry and metals classes at the University of Washington and at the Art Institute in Seattle from 2000 to 2005. Nanz was awarded the "Artist in Residence" at UW School of Art/Metals in 2005. She served as a fine jewelry designer for Nordstrom, Rudolf Erdel, and Tiffany & Co., as a marketing consultant for Neiman Marcus, and as the associate editor for Art Jewelry Magazine. Some of Aalund's many professional jewelry design awards include: 2 of each of these awards: Saul Bell Award, Gemmy Award, Platinum Guild International Award, and DeBeers Diamond’s Today Award, as well as a single AGTA Spectrum Award in 2001, and most recently, the 2023 Spotlight Award from the Cultured Pearl Association of America.

Nanz is the author of over 3 dozen jewelry articles published in jewelry trade journals since 1993. She has authored two books: “Masters Gold” published by Lark Books in 2009, and the AM&P Excel Award winning “A Jeweler’s Guide to Apprenticeships” published by MJSA press in 2017.

Online Zoom Webinar link to be provided via email as the date approaches.

Join artist and guild member Rachel Morris for an in-person, interactive jewelry and metal arts pricing discussion. Rachel will share her experience pricing jewelry for retail through this informative group exercise open to both Members and friends of the Seattle Metals Guild.

You: Bring 1-3 pieces of your finished jewelry or metals work and its current or intended retail price.

We: Together, we will anonymously share pricing thoughts for one another's work, without any names attached to it. No judgment! - We promise this is a safe learning environment.

Rachel: Our event leader will moderate a discussion around pricing of these items. Together we will discuss outcomes and reasoning, plus ways to move the price point needle up.

This interactive session is sure to lead to some big surprises, new perspectives, and fun while sharing peer insights.

Rachel Morris is an Artist/Educator and business consultant, whose wildly varied life path has been influenced by frequent childhood moves, unusual jobs, voracious reading habits, and mentors who enthusiastically and generously shared their craft with her.

She began metalwork at the tender age of 8, starting her first business soon after – the age apropos “Uniquorn Crafts” (from “unique + unicorn!"). Rachel holds a BA in Theater Arts and a Master of Arts in Teaching. Heavily influenced by her dual-professor parentage, she’s been teaching art classes since high school.

Rachel’s current practice, under the Eclectic Nature Jewelry & Design banner, focuses on hand-fabricated jewelry that emphasizes dimension and texture, with raw and cut stones. She is energized her students’ discovery processes and achievements, as they learn new techniques and find their own voices.

Pratt Auction Neckace ~ Bead Submissions Due

Pratt Auction Neckace ~ Bead Submissions Due

For many years, Pratt Fine Arts Center and the Seattle Metals Guild have collaborated on a necklace to be offered at the annual Pratt auction. Our organizations share many talented artists who are part of the rich arts fabric of our Puget Sound Region. Collectively, we embody a reverence for the value of the arts in our community. We invite you to contribute to this wonderful piece of art! With your contribution of a hand made bead in the materials and style of your choice, we would like to create a necklace for the 2024 auction. This year’s theme is Pratt Aglow.

100% of the revenue from the sale of the necklace goes directly to making the transformative experience of art-making accessible to all through Pratt’s programs. These programs serve thousands of students, instructors, working artists and learners of all ages.

Beads should be approximately 1” in size, with a hole for stringing that is at least 2mm in size. To allow for finishing the necklace by Pratt’s auction due date, we need all participating beads by January 25th, to be delivered (or mailed) to Pratt Fine Arts Center, 1902 S. Main St, Seattle, WA 98144, attention: Anne Randall. Please complete the form below and include a copy of it with your bead. The necklace will be assembled, photographed, and submitted on behalf of all participants. You will receive an email copy of the photo, and acknowledgement of the auction sale following the April event.

We look forward to seeing wonderful contributions that will come together in a spectacular work of art!
