President’s Letter November 2023

Hello friends,

First, I wanted to extend my heartfelt thanks to all of you for making the Seattle Metals Guild Symposium a success. Your presence and participation made this event truly special. It was inspiring to see so many talented presenters, artists, and enthusiasts coming together to share their knowledge, passion, and creativity. It was so nice to see so many of you and to feel such a strong sense of community. Thanks again to all our presenters, and the symposium board - great job!

We have a few more exciting events coming up! We have a lecture by our own Kristin Tollefson

lecture on November 8th, and we have our annual Holiday Party and Ornament Exchange on December 10th. Put both on your calendar now!

Artist and guild member Kristin Tollefson lived for five months in the Slovak Republic on a Fulbright Grant to study drotárstvo, the tradition of wire working recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Heritage. Her experiences during this time revealed more than a catalog of traditional techniques. Join us online Wednesday, Nov 8th at 6pm Pacific, as Tollefson shares insights into this country and culture, including implications for contemporary art, interpersonal communication, and repair so necessary in the world today. Visit https://kristin-tollefson-smg-lecture.eventbrite.com for more details and to register today!

The holiday season is upon us, and what better way to celebrate than by coming together for some festive cheer? You're cordially invited to the Seattle Metals Guild Holiday Party and Ornament Exchange, hosted at Micki Lippe's house on December 10th! Bring a handcrafted ornament (metal or otherwise) to exchange with fellow members. It's a wonderful way to showcase your skills and take home a unique piece of holiday artistry. Please bring a dish or beverage to share. We'll have a delightful spread of holiday treats, from savory to sweet, to enjoy together.

In admin news, the board is looking for a new secretary starting in January 2024. Our current secretary Cynthia Smutny will complete her term at the end of December. She’s done a wonderful job and we will miss her! If you’ve been thinking about stepping up and getting more involved in the guild, now is your chance. The secretary role includes note-taking at monthly board meetings, writing up the minutes from the meetings, and sending out the next meeting’s agenda. This is a fantastic opportunity to help out our community, and make your voice heard at meetings. Please apply now by responding to this email.

We look forward to seeing you at an event soon and sharing in the festive spirit!

Nina
